PAINTING AND WEATHERING THE BASE
PIC - 16 I used Marine styro-foam for the main part of the base as it's firm and easy to use plus it's great to cut and carve it. Once I got the look I wanted I carved out the area where the pod is going and then glued it to the wooden base using Wood Glue/PVA.

PIC - 17 The pod was placed into the hole and then extra foam was used to get the build up around it, Once I got the build done the pod was glued in place using Wood Glue/PVA.

PIC - 18 Once the pod has dried I used plaster of paris and mixed in some fine sand from the hobby shop and Wood Glue/PVA and mixed it all together, the reason wood glue is used is that it adheres really well to the foam and also stops the foam from cracking.

PIC - 19 Before the plaster has dried I used a Sandtroopers foot and pushed it into the plaster to add footprints, the same was done for C3-P0's tracks and for R2-D2's tracks a small screw driver was used. And Sandtroopers were glued in place using Superglue, you don't have to pin the troopers in place has the super glue and plaster will do the job plus I've found that if you use a pin and the figures do come off it takes a good chunk of plaster with it. Just using super glue you'll find only a very small section around the foot will break off if it does happen.

PIC - 20 Once the plaster has finally dried I used 2 coats of Vallejo's USA TAN EARTH on the base.

PIC - 21 & 22 After the Tan Earth has dried apply 2 coats of Vallejo's DARK SAND and again when the paint dries apply 2 coats of Vallejo's BROWN SAND.

PIC - 23 Lastly drybrush the base using a 2 part mix of DARK SAND and BROWN SAND and drybrush until you have the desired effect. You can also paint the wooden base and the sides of the scenery matt black.

PIC - 24 The completed diorama , you can see more pics in HEMBLE'S FIGURE WORKSHOP in the forum section and as always any question I'm more then happy to answer them.
